2+1 will be publicly screened for the first time at Theatreworks on the 29th of April. The film will is the closing film for the two-night event.

"FILAMENT is NTU Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information's inaugural screening of its final-year students' audio-visual projects. Organized by final-year students themselves, this year's event boasts a series of 13 distinct works from both drama and documentary genres. This year, we have decided to share our wealth of videos by bringing them out of campus for a premiere public screening.

Presenting a wide variety of programs, the event promises to bring viewers on an unforgettable trip across different stories reflecting assorted facets of life. FILAMENT is not only an event from guests from the industry to mingle with young talents of the local media industry, it is also an opportunity to for people who love production and the art of film-making to meet and discuss their passion.

Catch Filament at Theatreworks, 27 & 28 April, 8pm onwards.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

2+1 is a short film that explores the social issue of adultery in the context of contemporary Singapore society today. This social commentary subtly shows the duplicity that sometimes underlies what appear to be stable and committed marriages.

“As society progresses and people grow more independent, marriage and its sacredness is often questioned,” says producer and editor XU YANRU.

“Thus 2+1 deals with the third parties that can come between marriages. Using humor, we’re trying to highlight an otherwise serious problem without belittling the issue at hand.”

Director and co-scriptwriter, GOH LUEN YING, says: “Ultimately, this film is about choices and consequences. Our characters are faced with a series of choices in their lives.”

“We wanted to show the complexity of relationships today, that sometimes there can be no right or wrong but that each person can only make a choice based on their own desires and motives, while juggling the expectations and desires of lal the other people around them,” she adds.

Shot on DV and targeted at young working executives, this is the group’s first short film.

“Making this film was a fantastic opportunity to put the skills learnt in SCI to the test,” says producer and editor, TAN WEN LING.

“Our technical skills still require a lot of hard work to improve, but every shot, sound effect, music, or piece of dialogue, whether good or bad, was put together by us, and I think the final product is something that we can truly call our own.”

MARCUS GOH, director of photography and co-scriptwriter, sums it up: “Team work is when you hold the camera with one hand and the light stand with the other hand, your director is holding the monitor with one hand and slinging the wires over the other, the sound person is operating the mixer with one hand and holding the boom with the other, the production assistant is holding the lift open with one hand and holding the script in the other, and then all of you stick out your legs to stop the trolley from rolling away.”

The group hopes that this film will achieve its objective of addressing the issue of adultery and that after watching the film, audiences will walk away with their own conclusions and resolutions to the issue.

SYNOPSIS

2+1 is an exploration of contemporary marriages. Laden with dark humour, the drama is set in today’s world of young executives. It traces the sacrifice made by a working wife for the sake of marriage, and also details her intense inner conflict – to follow modern Western beliefs of independence and liberation, or to cling on to traditional Chinese values of faithfulness and loyalty.
